The Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago
Over the next four days, Democrats will outline their vision for America's future as they nominate their candidates for the highest offices in the land. The road to the convention has been tumultuous, with President Joe Biden dropping out of the race after a disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris has risen to the top of the ticket, choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

Chicago braces for protests as delegates flock to the city
An estimated 50,000 people are expected to attend the convention, with possibly tens of thousands of demonstrators. Chicago's 12,000 police officers, the Secret Service, and local leaders say they're ready for any disruptions. Residents, however, are less sure. Fences, barricades, and even snowplows have been used to limit movement in key downtown areas.

A tumultuous primary season comes to an end
Biden's decision not to seek reelection shocked the political world and opened the door for Harris to become the nominee. Biden's campaign had struggled to gain traction, and a poor debate performance sealed his fate. Now, as the convention begins, Democrats are rallying behind Harris and Walz, with a ceremonial vote expected despite their nominations already being finalized.

The convention schedule
The four-night event, titled "For the People, For Our Future", will feature a star-studded lineup of speakers, including:
- President Joe Biden (Monday)
- Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (Monday)
- Former President Barack Obama (Tuesday)
- Former First Lady Michelle Obama (Tuesday)
- Former President Bill Clinton (Wednesday)
- Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz (Wednesday)

Trump plans counterprogramming as Harris surges
As Democrats celebrate their nominees, Trump is preparing a series of anti-Harris events in key battleground states. Trump aides expect Harris to gain in the polls following the convention and are working to counteract her momentum. Trump is expected to campaign every day this week, Monday through Friday.
