DNR: 7-year-old girl found safe, two men presumed dead after boat capsized at LaSalle Lake

A 7-year-old girl was rescued from a capsized boat while her 53-year-old grandfather and 80-year-old great-grandfather, both from Indiana, were presumed dead, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said.

Two Indiana men were presumed dead and their 7-year-old granddaughter rescued after a boat capsized at LaSalle Lake, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Monday.

The girl was wearing a life jacket, but the men were not, the department said.

"Authorities received a 911 call about a distressed boater at the 2,000-acre lake near Marseilles shortly after noon Sunday," the DNR said in a news release.

First responders from multiple agencies searched the lake and recovered the bodies of the men around 7:45 p.m., the department said. The girl was safe on shore with park visitors who helped contact her family.

The men were identified as the girl's 53-year-old grandfather from Merrillville and her 80-year-old great-grandfather from Gary, Indiana, the department said.

The cause of the capsize is under investigation.
