Texas Volleyball: A History of Preseason Rankings & NCAA Success

The Texas Longhorns, currently ranked first in the preseason poll, have a storied history in college volleyball.

Since 1982, Texas has proven itself time and again, winning four NCAA championships.

1988: Underdogs to Champions

Texas started the '88 season at No. 7, but under coach Mick Haley, they quickly rose to the top. With a 34-5 record, they swept then-No. 1 UCLA in the semis and took the title from Hawaii.

2012: Finishing Strong

Ranked No. 2 in the preseason, Texas' consistent performance saw them win 23 of their last 24 matches, claiming their first NCAA title under coach Jerritt Elliott with a sweep of Oregon.

2022: Rising to the Top

Ranked No. 2, Texas quickly rose to No. 1 and maintained their position despite a brief slip. They ended a 10-year drought with a perfect sweep of Louisville.

2023: Preseason Predictions Proven Right

Starting at No. 1, Texas' regular season was rocky, but they defended their championship title with a decisive victory over Nebraska, proving the preseason polls right.

Texas volleyball continues to prove that while rankings are fleeting, their ability to rise to the top is enduring.
