CBP Seizes Millions Worth of Meth Disguised as Watermelons

$5 million worth of methamphetamine was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Protection at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego. The drugs were found hidden among actual watermelons, disguised as the fruit in bright green packaging.

"I am incredibly proud of our team for their exceptional work over the past few weeks in uncovering sophisticated and diverse smuggling methods," said Rosa E. Hernandez, Port Director for the Area Port of Otay Mesa. "As drug cartels continue to evolve their smuggling techniques, we will continue to find new and better ways to prevent these dangerous drugs and other contraband from entering the country."

The discovery was made during a secondary inspection of a 29-year-old man seeking entry from Mexico. The seizure totaled 4,587 pounds of meth, hidden in 1,220 packages.

This seizure follows another recent case where agents found nearly 3,000 pounds of meth hidden in celery.
