Gay Gentoo Penguin, Sphen, Dies; Magic Mourns

Sphen, half of the beloved gay gentoo penguin couple from Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, has died, leaving staff and fellow penguins "heartbroken." The aquarium announced Sphen's passing on Thursday.

Magic, Sphen's partner of eight years, was taken to his side after his death so he would understand that Sphen was not coming back. Magic began to sing, and the rest of the colony "beautifully reciprocated," said Richard Dilly, the aquarium’s general manager, in a statement. NBC News reported the emotional scene.

"Sphen and Magic are more than just a beautiful love story – their impact around the world as a symbol of equality is immeasurable," the aquarium said in a statement.

A Love Story Like No Other

Sphen and Magic, dubbed "the penguin power couple," celebrated six years together. During this time, the same-sex couple adopted two chicks, Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020, touching the hearts of many, according to an aquarium press release.

Inspiring People Around the World

Books, such as Sphengic, A True Love is Love Story about Family by Kristy Esson, have been written about the penguin couple and their love. They were also featured in documentaries, and their romance is included in Australia's school curriculum. Additionally, they inspired a Mardi Gras float that debuted in Australia about three years ago.

A Strange, Wholesome Romance

Sphen and Magic were inseparable, spending time together even outside the mating season, which is unusual for gentoo penguins. Sphen, the elder of the two, died just before his 12th birthday. Gentoo penguins can live up to 13 years in captivity.

Remembering Sphen: Fans Encouraged to Leave a Message

The aquarium encourages fans of the couple to leave messages of support or tributes to Sphen during this time of grieving on its website. The penguin team will review these messages before posting them.
