Late Summer Heatwave and Storms Threaten Midwest and Hawaii

A late summer heatwave will sweep across the upper Midwest while storms threaten the Hawaiian Islands this week.

Excessive Heat Warnings in the Midwest

Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis will experience excessive heat warnings at least once this week, with much of the region under heat advisories.

"Forecast highs in the mid-90s to near 100 combined with high humidity will send heat indices into the 105–115-degree range, with widespread heat-related advisories and warnings in place," said the National Weather Service.

Hawaii Braces for Second Named Storm

Hawaii faces Hurricane Gilma after surviving a brush with Hurricane Hone, which brought torrential rain and strong winds. Two named storms within 300 miles of the main Hawaiian Islands within a week have not occurred since 1992, according to AccuWeather.

Hurricane Hone

Hurricane Hone brushed past Hawaii on Sunday, dumping up to 18 inches of rain on the islands. Portions of Maui experienced winds up to 60 mph.

Hurricane Gilma

Hurricane Gilma is approaching Hawaii from the east, with sustained winds of up to 115 mph. The storm is expected to weaken but remain a hurricane through early Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Heat Wave in the Midwest

The Midwest will see a heat wave with excessive heat warnings.

"Those without efficient air-conditioning or who must spend time outdoors will be at a heightened risk of heat-related illness," the NWS warned.

The West will also see summer return in force, with dry conditions heightening fire danger.

"Some locales can see an increase in afternoon high temperatures of up to 35 degrees in just a few days," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Grady Gilman.
