Late Summer Heatwave and Storms Threaten US Regions

A late summer heatwave is set to affect the upper Midwest while storms threaten the Hawaiian Islands this week.

Midwest Heatwave

Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis will experience excessive heat warnings with much of the region under heat advisories.

"Forecast highs in the mid-90s to near 100 combined with high humidity will send heat indices into the 105–115-degree range, with widespread heat-related advisories and warnings in place," the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

Hawaii Faces Double Threat

Hawaii is bracing for a second named storm, Hurricane Gilma, following Hurricane Hone. Named storms have not approached within 300 miles of the main Hawaiian Islands within a week since 1992, according to AccuWeather.

Hurricane Hone

Hurricane Hone brought flooding rain and strong winds, with up to 18 inches of rain falling on the islands by Sunday, according to the NWS. Portions of Maui experienced winds up to 60 mph.

Hurricane Gilma

A second named storm, Hurricane Gilma, is approaching the islands. The storm was just under 1,400 miles east of the big island with sustained winds of up to 115 mph on Sunday.

The hurricane center predicts Gilma will weaken but remain at hurricane level through early Tuesday, losing steam as it approaches Hawaii late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Heat Wave Roils Midwest, West

The Midwest will experience a heat wave, with heat advisories and excessive heat warnings in place.

"Those without efficient air-conditioning or who must spend time or effort outdoors will be at a heightened risk of heat-related illness," the NWS said.

The West will see a return to summer temperatures, ending its fall preview.

"Some locales can see an increase in afternoon high temperatures of up to 35 degrees in just a handful of days," AccuWeather Meteorologist Grady Gilman said.
