Walmart Recalls Great Value Apple Juice Due to High Arsenic Levels

Walmart has issued a voluntary recall for over 9,500 bottles of its Great Value apple juice due to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic. Initially recalled on Aug. 15, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) upgraded the recall on Aug. 23 to a Class II recall, indicating the product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences."

Affected States and Products

The recall affects Walmart stores in 25 states. The specific product recalled is:

  • Product: Great Value apple juice in eight-ounce PET plastic bottles, sold as a six-pack
  • UPC code: 0-78742-29655-5
  • Best-by date: Dec. 28, 2024

Health Risks of Inorganic Arsenic

Inorganic arsenic is a confirmed carcinogen that can cause cancer with long-term exposure. Symptoms of long-term exposure may include:

  • Skin disorders
  • Increased risks of skin, bladder, and lung cancers
  • Cardiovascular disease

Short-term exposure symptoms can be less severe:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bruising
  • Numbness or burning sensations in the hands and feet

Although the arsenic levels exceeded industry guidelines, the FDA does not expect severe health impacts due to the low levels found.
