Man Sentenced to 80 Years for Killing Teen in Stolen Car Crash

An Austin man was sentenced to 80 years in prison for killing a 14-year-old boy while driving a stolen car in Round Rock in 2022. A Williamson County jury found Leandro Brito-Martinez, 28, guilty of murder in the death of Tobias "Victor" Soto.

On July 31, 2022, Round Rock police were alerted to a stolen vehicle via a law enforcement traffic camera system. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop Brito-Martinez, who sped off at nearly 100 mph, weaving through traffic on Louis Henna Boulevard.

"Despite the efforts of the Round Rock police to disengage, the vehicle ran a red light, smashed into another car in the intersection, and then struck and killed 14-year-old Tobias Soto, who was walking in the intersection," officials said.

Brito-Martinez fled on foot but was later arrested. He admitted to seeing police and stated that "he was going to flee regardless of the police actions."

Tobias's mother, who lived nearby, learned of her son's fate upon arriving at the intersection. Tobias was set to start as a freshman at Round Rock High School and had dreams of playing football.

Brito-Martinez has a lengthy criminal history, including prior convictions and pending charges at the time of the murder.

"Our hearts go out to Tobias’ mother and family, as well as all of the first responders and witnesses to this horrific event," District Attorney Shawn Dick said. "This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of our law enforcement and prosecution teams. Brito-Martinez’s actions resulted in a senseless tragedy, and today’s verdict ensures he is held accountable."
