Texas' Idle Weekend Leads to Potential No. 1 Spot in AP Poll

Four top-ranked teams in the Associated Press’ poll − No. 1 Alabama, No. 4 Tennessee, No. 9 Missouri, and No. 10 Michigan − lost on Saturday. Meanwhile, No. 2 Texas (5-0) did not play and remains among the 12 undefeated Football Bowl Subdivision-level teams.

Texas currently tops the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Longhorns were ranked first in the AP poll for two weeks earlier this season but ranked second by the coaches at that time.

If Texas takes Alabama’s No. 1 spot in the AP poll and retains its top ranking in the coaches poll, it will mark the first time since a three-week stretch in 2008 that UT has topped both polls.

Over the past 50 years, here are the times Texas has been simultaneously ranked No. 1 in the AP and coaches polls during a season. The Longhorns were considered the top team in both polls after the 2005 season ended with Texas beating USC for the national championship:

  • 2008: 3 weeks
  • 1984: 2 weeks
  • 1981: 1 week
  • 1977: 6 weeks
