Uvalde City Releases New Videos Showing Police Response to Robb Elementary Shooting

The city of Uvalde on Tuesday released an additional collection of videos and investigative materials highlighting law enforcement's flawed response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in May 2022, where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers.

The footage was delayed in being made public after an agreement between the city and news organizations across the state and nation, including the American-Statesman and its parent company, Gannett.

City officials determined after the August release of a large volume of records that some materials sought by the news agencies had been omitted. An Uvalde police sergeant has since resigned over the matter, but it remains unclear why the footage was not previously released.

The city is the only government entity to agree to release records to resolve a lawsuit brought by the news outlets.

The newly released material appears to further validate the public’s understanding of what happened that day, when about 400 officers descended on the campus but failed to act for more than an hour to breach the classroom where the 18-year-old gunman was armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle.

A Uvalde grand jury has since indicted former Uvalde school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo and former school district police officer Adrian Gonzales on child endangerment charges.

The botched response also led to investigations by the U.S. Justice Department, which concluded earlier this year that a faster response likely would have saved lives.
