Texas Faces Oklahoma as Top-Ranked Team

Texas will enter the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday as the No. 1 team in both the US LBM Coaches and Associated Press polls. This marks the first time in 40 years that Oklahoma will face a top-ranked Texas team.

In 1984, the Longhorns and Sooners played to a 15-15 tie. Texas topped both the coaches and AP polls, while Oklahoma was ranked second by the coaches and third by the AP.

Texas fans may remember Jeff Ward’s game-tying field goal as time expired. Oklahoma fans recall a potential victory-securing interception in the final seconds being ruled an incomplete pass.

Another notable aspect of the 1984 Red River Rivalry game was that future Texas head coach Mack Brown served as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator.

The 15-15 tie was the fifth time Texas held a No. 1 ranking in either the coaches or AP polls during the Red River Rivalry. The top-ranked Longhorns beat OU in 1946, 1962, 1964, and 1965.
