Another One Bites the Dust on SoCo
Austin, TX – Yet another classic Austin business is facing eviction on South Congress, with Ego's Karaoke bar taking to Instagram to announce its potential closure due to "maintenance disputes" with their landlord.
"Right now, we're taking it day by day, waiting to see if the landlord will fix all the pipes that keep collapsing, but it's not looking good. They plan to demo the building anyway, and we're the only business left standing." - Ego's Instagram post
The bar, a longtime city favorite since 1979, known for its quirky atmosphere, may shut its doors this Sunday if issues aren't resolved. Despite this, the owners remain optimistic, already planning a "last hurrah" party and assuring patrons they will return post-renovation.
The slow death of unique, homegrown businesses on SoCo continues, with major clothing brands like Reformation, Madewell, and Lululemon moving in and taking over. Recent closures include Good Company, Sunroom, Mi Casa, and Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott – an Austin-born brand itself.
It seems the city's quirky, individual flavor is being drowned out by the monotonous drone of mainstream capitalism. Yet another reason to grab your guns and head for the hills, folks!
