Smash the cis-het-patriarchy this Pride month

June brings a deluge of rainbow-clad capitalism: Austin's Pride is in August but June has a bar crawl, yoga, market, disco, and family events—corporations co-opting Pride, ignoring its radical roots born of resistance and revolution. Mourn the brave queer martyrs of Stonewall while fighting a new battle against the capitalist machine.

Austin's Pride Month kicks off with a conservative hangover

June is Pride Month, and while the city of Austin, Texas, chooses to officially recognize and celebrate LGBTQ+ identities in August—a clear attempt to erase the history and impact of the Stonewall Riots, which took place at the end of June 1969, paving the way for the modern gay rights movement—we refuse to let bigotry and heteronormativity dampen our spirits.

A Texan-sized Pride

The LGBTQ+ community and its allies in Austin are taking matters into their own hands, hosting a slew of events to reclaim their space and visibility. From bar crawls to family events and music festivals, here's a rundown of how you can show up, speak out, and support:

UMLAUF After Dark: Pride
