Blessed Carlo Acutis: A Saint for the Modern Age
Teen activist becomes first Millennial saint, recognized for his use of technology to spread faith and compassion.
Who was Acutis?
- Date of Birth: May 3, 1991
- Died: October 12, 2006 (leukemia)
Italian-born Londoner, Acutis, is now the first Millennial saint. This young tech-whiz utilized digital platforms to spread the Catholic faith and has since had miracles attributed to his intercession.
A Life of Faith and Compassion
Acutis, who considered a path to priesthood before his early death, has been recognized by the College of Cardinals, with his canonization approved, and sainthood imminent in 2025.
Bishop of Assisi, Domenico Sorrentino, reflects:
"He was an ordinary boy, a boy who lived his childhood and youth between family, school, and the games children play... [yet he lived] a life of faith that was nurtured until it reached a peak that now makes him stand out in the eyes of the Church and the world as a saint."
Miracles and Legacy
Already, two medical miracles have been linked to Acutis. Vatican News reports the story of a student in Florence who, after severe head trauma from a biking accident, made a miraculous recovery. The student's mother credits Acutis, having visited his tomb and leaving a note there the same day her daughter began to breathe on her own.
According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, saints are individuals who have:
- Lived heroically virtuous lives
- Offered their lives in service to others
- Died for their faith
Blessed Carlo Acutis ticks all these boxes and more. His legacy as a compassionate, faith-led teenager who used modern tools to spread love and compassion is an inspiration to all, regardless of faith.
