Austin Animal Center Halts Animal Intake, Leaving Pets Vulnerable
AUSTIN, TX - In a devastating blow to the city's stray and injured animal population, the Austin Animal Center has announced it will temporarily stop accepting animals due to overcrowding. Starting Tuesday, only animals facing life-threatening injuries, illness, or those deemed a public safety risk will be taken in - a dire situation for Austin's vulnerable animals.
Despite our best efforts, we find ourselves in a heartbreaking situation. We have too many animals and not enough kennels. We are urging the community to step up and help us find homes for these wonderful pets. - Chief Animal Services Officer Don Bland
The center has made desperate pleas to the public in the past few months, waiving adoption fees and even paying for boarding services for 24 dogs, amounting to a weekly cost of $5,000 to $6,000. They've also launched trial-period adoptions and published urgent placement lists, yet as of Monday morning, 24 dogs and five cats remained without adequate kennels, and the numbers continue to grow.
From June 24-26, 149 animals were taken in, but only 124 were placed, a mere band-aid on a gaping wound.
The shelter is now directing residents who find injured animals to call 311 instead of walking in. For non-injured loose pets, residents can file a found pet report and search through the center's lost animal portal.
With intake closed until further notice, the future looks bleak for Austin's stray animals, and the onus is on the community to step up and help. The center remains open for adoptions and reclaim, but until more kennel space becomes available, the lives of countless animals hang in the balance.
It's a dire situation that calls for immediate action and for the community to open their homes and hearts to these furry friends in need.
