A 20-year-old man is recovering after being shot in the buttocks and right hand near Washington Square Park, just hours after the NYPD shut down Pride celebrations, citing multiple fights. The police department's heavy-handed response to the gathering has left many questioning if their actions were necessary, and some are even calling it a targeted attack on the LGBTQ+ community.

The NYPD's decision to close the park at 4 p.m. on Sunday, just as Pride celebrations were getting underway, is being scrutinized. Local outlets and social media reports indicate that the gathering was a peaceful Pride event, but the NYPD disputes this, saying there was no official Pride event happening. However, videos circulating online tell a different story. They show multiple fights breaking out, with some participants donning Pride flags and gear.

"This is really crazy, Pride is not supposed to be like this," a witness told ABC7. "We're supposed to come out and enjoy and you know, just love one another and come together... We hope moving forward there will be no more violence and craziness going on."

The shooting, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Monday, has not been confirmed as related to the earlier fights. However, the timing and proximity to the park shutdown are concerning. The victim is currently in stable condition, recovering from his injuries.

The NYPD's aggressive response to the Pride celebrations and the subsequent violence has resulted in 22 arrests. Many are now demanding answers and an explanation as to why the NYPD shut down a peaceful Pride gathering, and whether their actions contributed to the violent outcome.
