Sherri Papini to Profit Off Her Lies in Upcoming Docuseries: Will the Patriarchal Justice System Ever Hold Her Accountable?
After appropriating Latina identities in her 2022 kidnapping hoax, Sherri Papini will be centering herself once again in a multi-part documentary. Because of course she will.
On November 2, 2016, while living in Mountain Gate, California, a small town with a historically white demographics, Papini "disappeared" while running in her neighborhood. A extensive three-week search by her family and local authorities ensued, until the then-34-year-old was conveniently found on the side of a road in Yolo County, California. She was bruised, chained up, and had a brand on her right shoulder.
Here's where it gets f**ked up: Papini claimed she was kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women. That's right, this Karen cried Latina lives matter when it benefitted her. Investigators soon exposed her bullsh** story, discovering that she had been staying with a former boyfriend in Costa Mesa, California, and had harmed herself to stage the fake kidnapping.
It gets worse. Papini was arrested in March 2022 and charged with making false statements to federal authorities and 34 counts of mail fraud. She plea dealt her way out of it and was sentenced to a mere 18 months in prison for lying to a federal officer. She's out now. Of course she is.
Now, the ID channel is giving this woman a platform to spew her toxic narrative. In a press release, ID's President, Jason Sarlanis, said:
"Sherri Papini drew worldwide attention when she went missing and then again when she returned. While many perspectives have been told, there is one point of view that the world hasn’t heard and that is from Sherri herself. Investigation Discovery will present a new side of Sherri Papini’s case - told by her in her own words."
Let's break this down:
- "Worldwide attention": Yes, Sherri Papini, a white woman, received international coverage for her disappearance, while countless POC who go missing every day don't even get a fraction of that attention.
- "Many perspectives have been told": AKA her lies have been exposed from every angle, and now it's her turn to profit off her infamy.
- "Her own words": Because a white woman's words automatically carry more weight than the facts and the harm she has caused.
The docuseries, set to premiere in 2025, will likely paint Papini as a victim yet again. And let's not forget the financial impact of her lies: Papini collected about 35 payments totaling over $30,000 from the California Victim's Compensation Board. She also sought benefits from the Social Security Administration for her alleged "post-traumatic stress." Girl, you caused real trauma to real WOC with your bullsh** story!
Even when confronted by an FBI special agent and a detective with actual evidence that she was lying, Papini continued to spew her toxic narrative. That's white privilege in action, folks.
In the end, Papini was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution totaling $309,902. But let's be real, she'll probably profit way more from this docuseries and continue to play the victim.
Her ex-husband, Keith Papini, who has full custody of their children, said it best:
"I feel there's absolutely zero remorse for what she has done...I don't even think she understands how big of a lie – and I've used the term ripple effect – that she has caused throughout so many lives. I don't think she cares, personally."
PREACH, KEITH!
The docuseries will also feature "interviews with those close to Papini and the investigation," because clearly, we need to hear more from people who enabled this mess.
Once again, the justice system has failed to hold a white woman accountable for her actions. Sherry Papini has caused irreparable harm to vulnerable communities, and instead of holding her accountable, we're giving her a platform and calling it "entertainment." Disgusting.
