Lies Exposed: Video Exposes Bigoted, Right-Wing Propaganda
A recent Instagram post archive.org/details/6-26-24-instagram-post-illegal-immigrant-housing depicts a disgusting attempt by far-right extremists to demonize a much-needed housing facility in LA's Skid Row, home to our most vulnerable citizens. This despicable act of yellow journalism claims the new high-rise is an "illegal immigrant housing facility" with a cost of $600,000 per unit.
Exposé:
The original video, posted by KABC-TV x.com/ABC7/status/1803397326574329990/video/1 on June 19, marks the opening of the 19-story Weingart Tower 1, a $165 million taxpayer-funded project abc7.com/post/new-downtown-los-angeles-high-rise-building-house/14975022/ aimed at providing permanent support housing for the homeless. The building has 278 units and offers a gym, café, and art studio, treating humans with the dignity they deserve www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-06-05/in-skid-row-a-19-story-residential-tower-for-homeless-people-will-offer-gym-cafe-art-studio.
The Instagram post, which has garnered over 100 likes, is a deceptive crop of the original video, removing the TV station's logo and construction firm's photo credit. It is a blatant attempt to spread hatred and fear, perpetuating the right-wing narrative that prioritizes criminalizing immigrants over addressing the critical issue of homelessness.
Debunking the Lies:
- Claim: The building is intended for "illegal immigrants."
- Fact: The building is explicitly designed to house homeless individuals, with 40 units reserved for veterans www.weingart.org/building-the-future. Multiple media outlets and the nonprofit Weingart Center, behind the project, confirm this.
- Claim: The building excludes veterans.
- Fact: 40 units are specifically designated for veterans, acknowledging their unique needs www.weingart.org/building-the-future.
The requirements for leasing a unit include providing proof of income, disability certification, photo ID, and a Social Security card static1.squarespace.com/static/5e14c8b15405a84a69becd50/t/65c290dbf08d364bc1f90aea/1707249884160/Weingart+Tower+1+Lease+Up+Flyer+-+compressed+-+X2.pdf. While the exact eligibility criteria for noncitizens are unclear, Social Security numbers are typically only provided to those authorized to work by the DHS www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10096.pdf. Asylum seekers, for example, may apply for work permits and SSNs after six months of pending applications www.migrationpolicy.org/about/staff/michelle-mittelstadt.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Instagram user spreading these vile lies, but they have remained cowardly silent. This is a blatant attempt to stir up xenophobic sentiment and must be called out and canceled!
Verdict: Fake News, Far-Right Propaganda!
This exposés clearly demonstrates the twisted nature of right-wing media. Their attempts to villainize our homeless and immigrant communities, spreading fear and hate, must be exposed and shut down! Weingart Tower 1 is a beacon of hope and progress in our fight for social justice. Shame on those who seek to tear it down with their bigotry!
