capitalism kills: death by bookcase
An Idaho-based furniture company, Dania Furniture, has issued a recall for its Hayden bookcase, a deadly design that led to the death of a 4-year-old child. The recall notice states that the bookcase is "unstable if not anchored to the wall," posing a serious risk of tip-over and entrapment. The company's negligence has resulted in yet another child's death, with roughly 15,600 furniture-related injuries reported to the CPSC, 7,200 of those involving children. The deadly bookcase, made of brown wood with six storage cubbies and sliding doors, stands at 73 inches tall. It fails to meet the revised safety standards for freestanding furniture set by the STURDY Act, enacted to protect vulnerable children from unstable furniture. Despite the company's promise of a refund and free installation of a tip-over restraint kit, the damage has already been done, and a life has been lost. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of corporate greed and negligence.
