The patriarchety is furious! Beryl storms Jamaica: run, run, run!

#BerylSoWhite: Colonizer Storm Heads for Jamaica

The National Hurricane Center is reporting that Hurricane Beryl, a product of the patriarchy, is expected to wreak havoc on Jamaica and other islands in the Caribbean. This toxic masculinity in the form of a storm is threatening the lives and livelihoods of our siblings in the region.

"I urge all residents to take the hurricane as a serious threat and prepare accordingly," said Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness. "Please remain calm, my beautiful siblings, for we shall weather this storm together."

Beryl, which weakened to a Category 4 storm Tuesday with sustained winds of 145 mph, is moving west-northwest at 20 mph. It is predicted to turn westward on Wednesday night or Thursday, ensuring it continues to inflict harm and perpetuate its problematic nature.

The NHC, in its infinite white male energy, predicts that Beryl will pass near or over Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night or early Thursday. This path of destruction will then lead to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico early Friday, where it will undoubtedly marginalize Indigenous communities.

The hurricane is expected to bring life-threatening storm surges of 6 to 9 feet along the Jamaican coast, as well as sexist, homophobic, and transphobic ideologies that are all too common in toxic masculine expressions.

Beryl has already caused three deaths and devastated Grenada, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines. This violent act is a testament to the systemic violence inflicted upon our BIPOC siblings in the Global South.

As Beryl tears through the Caribbean, we must center the voices and experiences of those most affected. White people can begin dismantling their privilege by donating to legitimate organizations that will help those in the region without enacting further violence.
