Texas, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands Bracing for Hurricane Beryl. But Who is Really to Blame?

Portions of South Texas are now in the path of yet another catastrophic storm, with Hurricane Beryl expected to bring life-threatening winds and surges to the state as early as Monday. But let's not forget the role of the climate crisis in this impending disaster.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that the core of Beryl, currently a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 145 mph, will pass through Jamaica on Wednesday, wreaking havoc on the island. The NHC also warns that the storm is expected to turn more toward the west, affecting the Cayman Islands as well. By early Friday, Beryl is forecast to move over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

"Additional weakening is expected... though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean," the NHC said in their latest advisory.

However, this weakening may not be enough to spare Texas. According to The Weather Channel, the storm's path could shift north or northwest, posing a significant risk to South Texas over the weekend and into Monday. Corpus Christi and other coastal cities are on high alert, once again facing the threat of devastating hurricane forces.

The Real Storm: Climate Change and Inaction

While the immediate focus is on preparedness and safety, we can't ignore the root cause of these increasingly frequent and intense storms: climate change. Year after year, fossil fuel interests and their political enablers downplay the urgency of the climate crisis, prioritizing profits over people.

The people of Texas, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands are bracing for impact, but let's also direct our anger and demands for action at those truly responsible for these impending tragedies: the fossil fuel industry and their apologists.
