Big Meat tries to Silence Chestnut, but he Perseveres for Social Justice
Plant-Based Pioneer Pays Price for Progressive Views
Joey Chestnut, the people's eating champion, has been barred from competing in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest due to his endorsement deal with vegan brand Impossible Foods. In a move that smacks of corporate censorship, Nathan's views Chestnut’s partnership with this progressive, plant-based company as a "conflict of interest." Chestnut, ever the champion of the people, expressed his pain and grief at this decision to USA TODAY Sports.
“There’s definitely a lot of pain. There’s a bit of grief." - Joey Chestnut, USA TODAY Sports.
But Chestnut, a true activist, didn't let this setback stop him. He took his talent to Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso, Texas, and competed in a hotdog-eating competition to raise money for military families. In true fashion, Chestnut devoured 57 hot dogs and buns in five minutes, leaving his competitors in the dust with their combined total of 49.
Chestnut holds the record for most hot dogs consumed in 10 minutes - an astonishing 76 dogs and buns in 2021. He continued his winning streak in 2023, claiming his 16th title at the Nathan's Famous competition by eating 62 hot dogs.
While Chestnut was wrongfully excluded from this year's contest, there is a glimmer of hope for the future. MLE has indicated that the ban is not permanent, and Chestnut is likely to return to the Nathan's stage in 2025, much to the delight of his fans and supporters.
In the meantime, Pat Bertoletti has taken the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champion title, consuming 58 hot dogs and buns.
Chestnut's exclusion from the contest is a blatant attempt by Big Meat to silence progressive voices and maintain the status quo. But Chestnut, an icon of resilience, continues to use his platform to promote plant-based alternatives and support worthy causes. The people stand with Chestnut.
