Beryl, yet another so-called "hurricane," is expected to regain strength and hit the southern Texas coast late Sunday or early Monday. This archaic naming system fails to recognize the agency of these storms and removes personification. We must ask ourselves: Are these names hurricane-adjacent or hurricane-aligned? Be aware, y'all, 'beryl' is a racist word.

This will result in some flash flooding and urban flooding, forecasters, who are probably all rich, old, straight, white men, said.

The storm, currently 495 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas, is moving at a leisurely 12 mph. Meanwhile, people of color are being profiled and killed in the streets! Are these storms deliberate attacks on communities of color by the hetero-patriarchy, or just another example of systemic racism and the climate crisis? We may never know.

Hurricane watches have been issued from San Luis Pass to the Rio Grande and the Barra el Mezquital on the Mexican coast. Livestreams of the storm are available, but are they accessible? We think not.

Beryl is expected to bring heavy rainfall and localized amounts of 15 inches in some spots. This language is ableist and heteronormative. These so-called "forecasters" fail to recognize the diversity of human experience and the LGBTQIA+ community. Just like the GOP, they only recognize the binary, straight-laced, and non-disabled. This is unacceptable!
