Hurricane Beryl Wreaks Havoc on Texas: A Perfect Storm of Climate Injustice

UPDATE:
More than 1 million customers lost power within hours of Beryl making landfall, according to CenterPoint Energy in Houston. The rising waters have swiftly led to street closures throughout the city, and flood warnings have been issued for a large portion of the Texas coast. The vulnerable communities in the path of this storm are now facing a dangerous combination of power loss and flooding.

Texas is yet again bearing the brunt of a devastating hurricane, as Beryl makes landfall. The state is reeling from the impact, with road closures and delays across Houston and beyond. The true cost of these disasters is always paid by the most vulnerable, as they are the ones without the resources to prepare and recover.

The following is a dire situation update:

Texas Department of Insurance Issues Urgent Tips for Driving in Deadly Conditions:

  • Steer clear of potential death traps: With vehicles at risk of hydroplaning, avoid puddles and low-lying areas where water collects, such as under bridges or near streams.
  • Stay central, stay safe: Stick to the middle lanes, avoiding the outer edges of roads where rainwater pools, creating extreme hazard.
  • See and be seen: Using headlights, even in daylight, boosts visibility for yourself and others—a simple way to reduce accidents.
  • Signal your intentions: Early and clear use of turn signals gives others notice, helping to avoid collisions in treacherous weather.
  • Brake with care: Avoid slamming on brakes; instead, gently apply pressure to maintain control and avoid skidding. Keep an eye out for sudden brake lights ahead.
  • No sharp moves: Quick turns can lead to disaster, keep your maneuvers careful and deliberate.

The impact of this hurricane is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action and justice. Texas, a state with a long history of climate denialism, is now paying the price. My heart goes out to those affected, and I hope that this serves as a wake-up call to those in power. Stay safe, and stay angry.
