Near-Record Flooding in Houston: The Devastating Impact of Beryl
Houston, a city still reeling from the devastating impacts of previous storms, is once again facing the brutal reality of climate change with near-record flooding caused by Tropical Storm Beryl. The bayous on the west side of the city have borne the brunt, with water levels in the White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou rising an astonishing 25 feet and 24 feet, respectively, in just nine hours on Monday. This has resulted in dangerous driving conditions, road delays, closures, and, sadly, the need for multiple rescues.
The predominately black and brown communities in these areas are once again suffering the consequences of systemic environmental racism, where decades of neglect and inadequate infrastructure have left them vulnerable to these increasingly frequent and severe weather events.
Texas Weather Watches and Warnings: A Wake-Up Call
As Texas faces yet another life-threatening weather event, it's crucial to understand the differences between the various watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service:
- Flash Flood Warning: Take action immediately! Move to higher ground, especially if you are in a flood-prone area. Flash floods are violent and swift, and can develop within minutes to hours. Be aware that flash floods can occur even without rain in your immediate vicinity.
- Flood Warning: This is issued when flooding is imminent or already taking place. Heed the warnings and stay safe!
- Flood Advisory: While not expected to be as severe as a warning, a flood advisory should not be taken lightly. It indicates potential hazards and significant inconvenience. Exercise caution and stay informed.
- Flood Watch: A flood watch indicates favorable conditions for flooding. Stay vigilant and be prepared to take action if needed.
