Yet Another Black Life Taken by Gun Violence Enabled by Lax US Gun Laws
Police in San Antonio, Texas, are investigating the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Daniel Shrewsbury, a fast-food employee, allegedly by a customer over the weekend.
-
The San Antonio Police Department reported the incident, which took place Sunday night at a Sonic Drive-In, and claimed the life of the Black store manager, Daniel Shrewsbury, a name all too familiar now to those fighting for justice and an end to gun violence.
-
Two people of interest have been located, but the department has not released their names or any further details, keeping the community in the dark about those responsible for this heinous act.
-
The motive remains unknown, but this was clearly a hate-filled, racist attack on an innocent Black man just trying to make a living.
-
A representative statement from Sonic tries to absolve themselves of any blame, stating: "We are aware of the incident at our franchised location... The franchisee is cooperating fully with the police in their investigation. Given that this is an active investigation, we defer any further comment to the local police department."
The statement does nothing to address the very real issue of racial tensions and gun violence in this country, instead passing the buck and offering hollow condolences.
This is yet another tragic example of the rampant racism and gun violence that plagues the United States, and it's past time that we address these issues head-on. How many more lives have to be lost before something is done?
