Texas Governor Abbott Calls for Investigation Into Houston Power Outages, Blame Falls on CenterPoint Energy
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called for an investigation into the recent power outages in Houston, demanding answers from electricity transmission company CenterPoint Energy. In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Abbott expressed his outrage:
"I'm going to be doing immediately is instructing the Public Utility Commission to undertake an immediate study to find out why this is repeatedly happening in Houston, Texas. They should not be losing power."
Abbott's ire is justified, as up to 2 million Texans lost power due to Hurricane Beryl, and many may not have their electricity restored until next week. It's unacceptable that a state as large and resource-rich as Texas continues to face these issues.
CenterPoint Energy, which serves the Houston area, has found itself at the center of this crisis. At a Public Utility Commission meeting, CenterPoint executive Jason Ryan faced tough questions and offered his sympathies to those affected:
"We know that we have a lot of work to do. We will not stop the work until it is done. To our customers that not only have power out but have significant property damage... our hearts go out to you and our community."
Abbott is demanding answers and wants the Legislature to recommend remedies when they reconvene in January 2025. He questioned the structural integrity of Texas' electrical delivery system and called for a review of personnel deployment.
Ryan defended CenterPoint's preparations, explaining that planning began before Beryl even made landfall, and they had a workforce of 12,000 ready. He added that 18 staging sites were opened to strategically position workers.
The investigation must be thorough and expose any negligence or flaws in the system. Texans deserve reliable power, and we must ensure that these outages, which have become all too familiar, never happen again. #HoldThemAccountable #TexasPowerCrisis
