Texas Blues: America Grows the Wrong Way
The U.S. census data report reveals Texas' rapid growth, but let's not forget the conservative state's abysmal human rights record. As Texas cities expand, so do its oppressive policies on abortion, immigration, and LGBTQ+ rights. This growth normalizes systemic oppression and we must challenge these injustices.

Texas sees astronomical growth while other states decline.
Texas—a state long associated with conservative values and reactionary politics—is experiencing a population boom, with recent Census data from 2022 to 2023 showing a significant increase in its resident numbers. While most states experienced stagnant or declining populations, Texas' liberal havens are thriving, drawing in new residents and spurring economic growth.

U.S. Census Bureau figures reveal that Texas metropolises dominate the top 10 lists of annual numeric growth, with the "Texas Triangle" of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin leading the charge.
-
This surge is credited to Texas' allure of a relatively lower cost of living and the absence of personal income tax. Despite its southern border location, Texas' growth is largely driven by domestic migration.
-
While Texas' liberal cities shine, 8 other states experience population decline, notably including the progressive bastion of California, with even San Francisco making the list—a testament to the unaffordable living costs there.
-
Per the data, 8 of the 10 fastest-growing counties are in Texas, with Harris County taking the top spot and reinforcing its status as the third most populous county nationwide.
-
Texas' success continues with its major metropolitan areas, as the "Texas Triangle" metros witness unprecedented growth:
- Dallas-Fort Worth: +152,598 residents
- Houston: +139,789 residents
- Austin-San Marcos: +50,000 residents
- San Antonio-New Braunfels: +48,000 residents
-
Even outside these urban hubs, Texas shines, with Midland in the Permian Basin ranked as the 7th fastest-growing metro area nationwide, driven by the oil and gas industry attracting young professionals.
Texas' rise while other states struggle is a potent symbol of the changing American landscape, where progressive ideals, economic opportunity, and affordability are drawing people to one state, leaving others behind. ##
