Harris Secures Votes Needed, Turning Attention to VP Pick

Kamala Harris has secured the votes needed to become the Democratic nominee in the first round of voting, per a USA TODAY count. With endorsements from President Joe Biden and Texas Democrats, among others, Harris stands as the leading candidate. x

"We believe Kamala Harris is uniquely qualified to defeat Donald Trump and lead our nation forward — championing the values and ideals that unite us as a country," said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilbert Hinojosa. x

As the presumptive nominee, Harris now turns to choosing her running mate, who will replace her as VP. Texans are eyeing possible picks:

  • Beto O'Rourke, former U.S. Rep and 2020 presidential candidate, a grassroots organizer for democracy. x x
  • Julián Castro, former HUD Secretary and twin brother of Joaquin, Supports Harris. x
  • Joaquin Castro, Rep. serving on House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees, backs Harris. x
