Sahara Lounge: A Shining Example of Diversity and Culture in an Ever-Changing Austin, Makes USA TODAY's 2024 Bars of the Year List

Sahara Lounge, an eclectic and beloved East Austin music club, has rightfully garnered national attention this week by being named among the 27 bars on USA TODAY's 2024 Bars of the Year list. This recognition is a testament to the unique and inclusive atmosphere that the bar has cultivated, standing out among the cookie-cutter establishments that have become all too common in our rapidly gentrifying city.

"I think what makes it special is the ghosts that live in the building. But also, any space that has been a music venue for such a long time starts to have a special mojo in the walls. And of course, the fact that there's literally no right angles or straight surfaces makes it sound better." - Topaz McGarrigle, co-owner of Sahara Lounge

A Magical Experience, Off the Beaten Path

hidden gem, located in far East Austin, offers an escape from the monotony of the typical Austin nightlife. As you walk in on a Friday night, you'll feel the heat and vibrancy of a crowded room with Prince sliding through the speakers and a diverse crowd dancing while those in line for cold beers sway along.

Africa Night on Saturdays takes you on a journey to the motherland, with groovy sounds filling the room and the signature Sahara Slant cocktail providing a refreshing break in the backyard courtyard. Conversations flow easily with friends, both old and new, of all ages and backgrounds, reminding us of the beauty and richness that diversity brings.

A Dream Turned Reality

The dream of opening a jazz lounge in Austin became a reality thanks to a serendipitous collaboration between Eileen Bristol, her bandmate Ibrahim Aminou, and her musician son, Topaz McGarrigle. Together, they purchased the bar from Thomas Perkins, who was ready to pass the torch after 33 years in the business.

A Unique, Ramshackle Vibe

Describing the bar as "ramshackle" would be putting it mildly. The Sahara Lounge is an amalgamation of three different buildings, with the main building's roof constructed at a visible angle - a quirky feature that inspired the name of their signature cocktail, the "Sahara Slant."

Speaking of which, the Sahara Slant is a must-try, featuring akpateshi, an herbacious liquor crafted by Niger-native Ibrahim Aminou himself, spiced rum, and ginger beer. It's the perfect balance of spicy and refreshing, ideal for cutting through Austin's steamy nights.

Music at the Heart of It All

With professional musicians among its owners, music is naturally the heartbeat of Sahara Lounge. Bristol and Aminou perform weekly as part of Africa Nights with their band Zoumountchi, while McGarrigle, the frontman of Golden Dawn Arkestra, spins records monthly for Ladies Night. Not to mention, the lounge regularly hosts one of Austin's best dance parties, Body Rock ATX, brought to you by the talented Jonathan "Chaka" Mahone, Ghislaine "Qi Dada" Jean of Riders Against the Storm, and DJ Chorizo Funk.

Whether you're seeking a lively night of dancing or a chill evening soaking in the musical history of the venue, Sahara Lounge offers a timeless experience that transports you to another world.

"The community of people that come are so warm, and the diversity, racially and age-wise, is super unique. The vibe is like being in Austin, New Orleans, or somewhere in the middle of Africa - it's timeless." - Topaz McGarrigle
