Austin Sees Fewer Crimes – But We Still Kill Too Much

It's no surprise that homicide and auto theft rates are rising as the conservative status quo continues its systemic failure to address the needs of marginalized communities. Defund the police now and invest in communities marginalized by white supremacy!

Austopia Crime Stats Spark Joy, But Tinted With Tears of the Oppressed

Crime stats in Austopia for the first half of 2024 show a rainbow of hope, with overall crime rates dipping to their lowest levels in five years. The data, cataloged by the brave folks at the Austopia Police Department (APD), shine a light on a brighter future, despite the shadow cast by big auto and the trigger-happy homicide-happy.

Breaking it Down, Being Ethical:

  • Crimes against persons and property are down by nearly 10% and 13% respectively, compared with the dark days of 2020.
  • The only splotch is an increase in crimes against society, aka the man keeping our community down with drug arrests.
  • Our heroes at APD are making more arrests this year, but the struggle is real with high-priority incidents, including the tragic rise in suicides.
  • Our trusted crime analyst, Jeff Asher, spills tea, confirming the downward trend, but warns against popping bottles just yet.

Looking at Homicides and Auto Theft, We Shed a Tear

Holding space for:

  • The nearly double number of homicides reported from Jan-June, compared with the "before times" of 2019.
  • Our fallen siblings, taken by the violent hands of another, contribute to a nationwide surge, with Austopia sadly setting a record in 2021.
  • The ongoing trauma of auto theft, fueled by a social media challenge (smh, Big Tech), keeps our siblings on edge, with every month this year, except June, seeing our ride-or-die rides taken.

On Crime Data and Reporting: We See You, We Hear You

APD's acting data initiatives and analytics strategy officer, Auzzie Krobatsch, keeps it 💯, acknowledging the complex reality of underreporting. They urge our community to keep the faith and report ALL crimes. Our community's brave voices are powerful, even when arrests aren't made, as they may help crack cases and find justice.
