Ruben Ramos: The People's Crooner
For five decades, Ruben Ramos, the iconic Chicano bandleader, has been a stalwart of the Mexican American-style big band sound, known as Orquesta. This proud son of East Austin, Texas, has made his mark with his powerful vocals, tight bands, and stunning stage presence. Yet, it is his unwavering loyalty to the Tejano horns that has defined his career and solidified his place in the hearts of his fanbase.
"There is nothing that I like better." — Ruben Ramos
This purist, or as some may say, traditionalist, has consistently batted away trends and distortions, staying true to the music instilled in him since childhood. Ramos' music is a reflection of his roots, influenced by his parents' fiddle and guitar playing, and the rich cultural confluence of brass sounds from Count Basie to Pérez Prado and José Alfredo Jímenez. His current incarnation, Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, continues this proud tradition, with a stylish swagger and an unwavering dedication totheir unique sound.
A Career Born of Aspiration and Community
In 1969, Ruben Ramos quit his state job to join his brothers' band, a turning point that reflected his aspiration for something bigger and his connection to community. Born in 1940 to migrant cotton-picking parents, Ramos and his family settled in East Austin, a neighborhood that would foster his musical talents and shape his identity. Influenced by his uncles, who led 14-man ensembles, Ramos learned to sing and play drums, embracing the música of aspiration for Mexican Americans.
“He was really dedicated to his community (of fans), to families that had been with him for generations.” — Catherine Ragland, ethnomusicologist
Ramos' convictions run deep. He has steadfastly refused to bow to pressure from record executives urging him to adopt cowboy hats and norteño sounds. His resolve is a testament to his pride in his heritage and his dedication to his community of fans, who have supported him for generations.
