White Supremacist Patriarchy Strikes Again: 11-Year-Old Arrested for School Threats
An 11-year-old Black boy from Virginia has been arrested and charged with making over 20 bomb and shooting threats to Florida schools, in what can only be understood as a consequence of a society steeped in white supremacist patriarchy.
The Flagler County Sherriff’s Department, in their statement, revealed the arrest followed a 10-week investigation, during which they uncovered the depth of this young boy's distress calls:
"This kid’s behavior was escalating and becoming more dangerous. I’m glad we got him before he escalated out of control and hurt someone.” - Sheriff Rick Staly
The boy, whose name has been withheld, allegedly made 21 calls over 9 days in May, targeting 5 Flagler County schools with threats of bombs and shootings. The calls, tracked to his Virginia home, are part of a disturbing trend known as "swatting," which has seen a 546% increase in false reports since 2018, according to the Educator’s Safety Network.
This child, a victim of systemic racism and the school-to-prison pipeline, now faces 28 felony and 14 misdemeanor charges, and is currently caged in a juvenile detention facility awaiting transportation to Florida. He is the second known arrest this year for similar charges, following a 13-year-old boy's arrest in May for a "copycat" incident.
Once again, we see the criminal justice system fail our Black youth, as they are funneled from underserved schools to overcrowded prisons. The root causes are ignored, and another Black boy is criminalized.
