Police Brutality: A Systemic Illness, A Human Cost
A Black man, Victor Moses, 29, is suing the Denver Police Department and Denver Health for a horrific initiation ritual that cost him his legs and almost his life. The lawsuit, filed in Denver District Court, exposes a culture of brutal violence and systemic cover-ups within the department, enabling excessive force and dehumanization with zero accountability.
"I never thought that I would become the target of police brutality as I was training to become a police officer. Now I am picking up the pieces and coming to grips with a lifetime of disabilities." - Victor Moses
The Human Cost
On Jan. 6, 2023, Moses underwent a "dynamic action drill," a.k.a. "Fight Day," where he was knocked unconscious, hit his head, and sustained life-threatening injuries. Paramedics, complicit in this culture of brutality, ignored Moses' clear distress, sickle cell trait, and dangerously low blood pressure, allowing him to continue. This resulted in Moses requiring multiple surgeries, leg amputations, and a four-month hospitalization, battling compartment syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, malignant hyperthermia, and hyperkalemia.
Root Cause: Violent Training, Systemic Cover-Up
Lawyers for Moses pinpoint the department's training as a breeding ground for excessive force, with attorney John Holland stating:
"Instead of training police properly in constitutional use of force techniques, including de-escalation and rendering emergency aid to the injured, [they] teach police recruits it is acceptable to seriously injure people, even fellow officers like Victor Moses, to the point of unconsciousness and then not timely secure emergency care."
The department's archaic and violent "Fight Day" is a clear indication of a brutal and outdated mindset. Darold Killmer, Moses' lawyer, condemns this unnecessary brutality, exacerbated by complicit paramedics who enabled continued violence, even as Moses lay unconscious.
The department then lied to the media, covering up their actions and blaming Moses' injuries on undisclosed conditions.
The Way Forward: Justice and Accountability
Victor Moses is seeking damages for six claims, including a claim against individual officers. This lawsuit sends a clear message: no one is above the law, and those who perpetrate violence and cover up the truth must be held accountable. It is time for a radical reform of police training, ending the culture of brutality and restoring faith in a system that protects all citizens, not just those with a badge.
