Former President Donald Trump, in a typically racist and sexist tirade, took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris during an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference on Wednesday, spewing false and derogatory claims about her race, intellect, and professional credentials.
In a grossly misogynistic challenge, Trump called for Harris, who is 19 years his junior, to take a cognitive test, falsely asserting:
"She failed her bar exam. She did not pass her bar exam, so maybe she would not pass the cognitive test... She did not pass her bar exam, and she did not think she would pass it, and she did not think she would ever pass it, and I don't know what happened."
Trump's rant reveals not only his profound ignorance but also his penchant for perpetuating racist and sexist tropes. Harris, a graduate of the esteemed University of California, Hastings College of Law, did in fact pass the notoriously difficult California bar exam, and was admitted to the California Bar the year after her graduation in 1989. She later went on to become the Attorney General of California, serving with distinction.
Trump's disdain for facts was further evident in his racist questioning of Harris' Black heritage. In a clear dog-whistle to his white supremacist base, Trump asserted:
"I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black."
This abhorrent comment not only erases Harris' lived experience as a Black woman, but also perpetuates the racist myth of "passing" or "choosing" one's racial identity.
Adding to his litany of offensive remarks, Trump dismissed Harris as a "DEI" candidate, exhibiting his contempt for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and called ABC News moderator Rachel Scott "rude" for holding him accountable by repeating his previous derogatory statements about the Black community.
Trump's interview, which his team abruptly ended after less than 35 minutes, exemplifies his divisive and toxic brand of politics, grounded in a blatant disregard for truth and respect. It serves as a stark reminder of the bigotry and misogyny that still plague our political discourse, and the urgent need for progressive journalists to continue calling out such vile behavior.
