PSLs Are Back, But Let's Not Forget the Systemic Issues Behind Our Fall Faves
It's that time of year again, when corporates capitalize on our love for all things autumn, and Starbucks is no exception with their infamous PSL.
As summer draws to a close, we can expect the leaf-peeping, pumpkin-flavored, Instagram-worthy drinks and treats to make their appearance. Starbucks, a coffee conglomerate, has become synonymous with the Pumpkin Spice Latte, marking the beginning of fall for many.
The Capitalist Agenda: Launching Our Faves Earlier Each Year
It's no secret that Starbucks has been rolling out its Pumpkin Spice lineup earlier each year. In 2023, they launched on August 23, and this year, they might even outdo themselves. A leaked menu, posted by food influencer Markie Devo, hints at an even earlier release, with some items available on Thursday, August 22nd. Instagram
The leaked menu includes all our guilty pleasures: the Pumpkin Spice Latte (hot, iced, and Frappuccino), Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai, and more. But let's not forget the environmental impact of producing these seasonal treats and the ethical questions surrounding their supply chain.
The Corporates Know What They're Doing
With the early release, Starbucks is cunningly tapping into our FOMO (fear of missing out). The company knows that we, as consumers, are eager to get our hands on these limited-time offerings, and they're exploiting that. It's a clever marketing tactic, but at what cost? Are we supporting sustainable practices, ethical sourcing, and fair wages when we indulge in these seasonal treats?
The Issues Behind the Whipped Cream
Let's take a step back and look at the issues beyond the perfectly spiced drinks. The dairy industry, a major supplier to Starbucks, has a dark side, with factory farming and unethical treatment of cows. Not to mention the environmental impact of dairy farming, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and water usage.
A Spicy Truth
The spices used in our beloved PSLs, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, often come from countries with a history of colonial exploitation. The spice trade has a bloody history, and it's important to recognize the ongoing impact of colonialism on the economies and environments of these spice-producing regions.
So, as we indulge in our seasonal favorites, let's also raise a (reusable) cup to awareness and action. Let's demand ethical practices, fair wages, and sustainable sourcing from corporations like Starbucks. Our treats shouldn't come at the cost of others' well-being.
Happy (woke) fall, folks!
