Sen. Mark Kelly Blasts Trump as a 'Scared Old Man' After Racist Attack on VP Harris

Sen. Mark Kelly blasted former President Donald Trump's combative interview with Black journalists on Wednesday, calling him a "scared old man" and condemning his racist comments on Vice President Kamala Harris' racial identity.

"I think those were the comments of a desperate, scared old man who, over the last week especially, has been having his butt kicked by an experienced prosecutor. He’s not going to change. It’s who he is. Yeah, sure. But it’s who the guy is. He’s always been like this.” - Sen. Mark Kelly

Trump, in an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, made a racially charged comment about Harris, who is of Black and Indian-American heritage. "She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person," Trump said, drawing gasps from the reporters.

Sen. Kelly, a potential VP pick himself, didn't hold back in his criticism of Trump, implying the former president is a racist unable to change his ways. Kelly also took aim at Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, accusing him of exploiting the border crisis for political gain.

"Like a lot of other Republicans, they don't actually want to solve this problem. They just want to talk about it. That’s why his running mate, JD Vance, is down at the border to take a picture. That’s the only reason he’s there." - Sen. Mark Kelly

The Arizona Democrat has embraced a more aggressive tone toward Trump and his Republican allies, as the 2024 election cycle heats up. Kelly is believed to be a finalist for Harris' running mate, along with Govs. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Tim Walz of Minnesota.
