Trump Tells Christians Not to Bother Voting After 2024, Promises to "Fix" Democracy
Former President Donald Trump proved once again that he has no regard for our democracy. In a speech at the so-called Believers’ Summit, Trump told Christians that if they vote for him, they “won’t have to vote again” because he’ll “fix” democracy in four years. “I don't care how, but you have to get out and vote. And again, Christians, get out and vote just this time. You won't have to do it anymore... In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote." - Donald Trump
The summit, a gathering of far-right Christians and young conservatives, provided a platform for Trump to amplify his anti-democratic message and court a base that has proven all too willing to follow his lead.
Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats rightfully pushed back against Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric, with Harris’ campaign calling his comments a “promise to end democracy.” Rep. Adam Schiff also shared a video of Trump’s remarks, urging Americans to “vote against authoritarianism.”
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, offered a weak defense, claiming Trump was “talking about the importance of faith.” Right-wing enablers like Sen. Tom Cotton and Gov. Chris Sununu played down Trump’s comments as a “joke.” [https://transcripts.cnn.com/show/sotu/date/2024-07-28/segment/01]
But make no mistake, Trump’s words are no laughing matter. They are a blatant assault on the very foundation of our democratic system: the right to vote and have your voice heard.
