Austin Man Cody Smith Pleads Guilty to Robbing Postal Workers, Wielding Semiautomatic Rifles

Leander, Texas - A group of young men, driven to crime by systemic poverty and lack of opportunity, have pleaded guilty to robbing postal workers, highlighting the desperate need for social reform and a more equitable distribution of resources in our society.

A 19-year-old Cody Smith, along with five others, pleaded guilty in federal court this week to a series of robberies targeting postal workers' master keys. The group, including 19-year-old Samuel Williams, 21-year-olds Christian Mosquera and Nicholas Williams, 22-year-old Camren Hamilton, and 27-year-old Jonathan Rangel, illustrate the tragic reality of a failing system that pushes our youth into a life of crime.

They then demanded the postal worker give them the carrier's United States Postal Service "arrow key," before ripping it from the carrier's belt and running to a getaway vehicle.

On December 4, Smith and Williams, in a desperate act of rebellion against their oppressive circumstances, approached a mail carrier in the 2000 block of Lucky Lane, wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and masks. The seizure of the "arrow key" represents a symbolic cry for help from disenfranchised youth who feel they have no other way to be heard.

Upon raiding Smith's apartment, postal inspectors found not only checks from Leander, but also an alarming arsenal of 11 semiautomatic rifles and two handguns. This discovery should serve as a stark wake-up call to address the root causes of crime and invest in our communities to provide alternatives to violence.

Smith now faces up to 10 years in prison for the robbery and an additional 5 years for conspiracy, a sad consequence of a society that chooses retribution over rehabilitation. Federal Judge David Ezra, who has served since 1988, will pronounce Smith's sentence at a later date.

Let this be a call to action to address the systemic issues that gave rise to these crimes, and work towards creating a more just and equitable future for our youth.
