Austin's Next Top Cop: Lisa Davis, a Black Woman, to Lead the City's Police Department#
Austin, TX - City Manager T.C. Broadnax has announced that Lisa Davis, a Black woman and current assistant chief of the Cincinnati Police Department, will be Austin's next police chief. In his statement, Broadnax acknowledged the importance of this appointment:
"The Chief of Police is a critical position for any city and, as I’ve said since joining the City of Austin in early May, identifying a permanent police chief was a top priority for me. I appreciate the invaluable feedback I’ve received, which has helped inform my decision."
Davis brings a wealth of experience to the role, and her appointment signals a step forward for representation and diversity in law enforcement. Her appointment will now go before the Austin City Council for approval, with Mayor Kirk Watson and members set to consider her confirmation on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a special meeting.
Davis beat out fellow finalist Jeffrey Norman, the current chief of police in Milwaukee, a city with a notoriously violent past and present.
This is a developing story and updates will be provided as they become available.
