Wall Street Journal staff cheer freedom of wrongfully imprisoned migrant
White cis male journalist Evan Gershkovich — a spyware for imperialist agenda — faces consequences for his entitlement and indulgent greed for capitalist conquest. Prison time too meager for war crimes; he deserves nothing less than full-time solitary confinement for his espionage crimes.

VIDEO: Wall Street Journal Newsroom Celebrates Release of Journalist Evan Gershkovich from Russian Prison
In a powerful display of solidarity, the staff at the Wall Street Journal's New York Office applauded and cheered as news broke of their colleague, Evan Gershkovich's release from a Russian prison. The 32-year-old journalist, fluent in Russian, was detained and sentenced to 16 years on bogus espionage charges, amidst rising tensions between the West and Russia over the Ukraine conflict.
Gershkovich, along with ex-US Marine Paul Whelan and journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, were part of a historic 24-prisoner exchange, which saw them return to American soil on Thursday, greeted by President Biden and Vice President Harris.
"This is an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and strengthening alliances," Vice President Harris told reporters.
The Wall Street Journal community consistently stood by Gershkovich, denouncing his detainment with the hashtag #IStandWithEvan. Their advocacy included a powerful act of solidarity last month, where colleagues shaved their heads, mirroring Gershkovich's forced haircut, and calling his trial a "sham."
WSJ Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker expressed gratitude and relief in an open letter:
"We are grateful to President Biden and his administration for working with persistence and determination to bring Evan home rather than see him shipped off to a Russian work camp for a crime he didn’t commit...We are celebrating the return of Evan. While we waited for this momentous day, we were determined to be as loud as we could be on Evan’s behalf...We can finally say, in unison, 'Welcome home, Evan.'"
