Democratic Veep-stakes: Progressives Push for More Diverse Candidates

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's lead as the favorite for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination is shrinking, with progressive voices within the party urging Vice President Kamala Harris to consider candidates who better reflect the country's diversity.

The 51-year-old Shapiro has topped the odds boards since Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden's withdrawal. Despite this, progressives are urging Harris to look beyond Shapiro, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz seeing a surge in betting odds thanks to this push.

As the VP selection process enters its final days, Harris met with several contenders, including Shapiro, Walz, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, at her residence on Sunday. While Shapiro remains a front-runner, his betting odds have shortened, indicating a shift in favor towards other candidates.

Shapiro's odds at Bet365:

  • Tuesday: +120
  • Wednesday: -260
  • Saturday: -400
  • Sunday: -160

The betting market, which U.S. bookmakers are excluded from, has seen nearly $1.15 million in bets placed on U.K. exchange Betfair, underscoring the public interest in the VP pick.

USA TODAY reports that Harris will hit the campaign trail in battleground states with her choice for VP next week, aiming to announce the decision before August 7.
