Missed chance at change, Austin stays conservative.

Time for city officials to step up, divest from exploitative institutions and discard austerity measures that burden our citizens. We demand investment in our communities: progressive steps for a prosperous future.

Austin's Budget Proposal: A Tone-Deaf Display of Fiscal Irresponsibility

Austin’s proposed $5.9 billion budget is a prime example of the city's detachment from the financial struggles of its residents. With a staggering $2 billion increase compared to four years ago, the budget demands an 8.2% hike in city property taxes, utility bills, and fees, placing an enormous burden on Austinites already grappling with inflation and a rising cost of living.

“The burdens of high inflation fall heaviest on those who are least able to bear them.” – Fed Chairman Jerome Powell

In a time when inflation has hit a startling 19% in three years, with specific sectors experiencing even higher surges (childcare at 32% and groceries at 25%), the city's decision to raise property taxes and utility bills by 18.6% is tone-deaf and harmful. The proposed 5.7% property tax increase and higher energy and water bills will disproportionately affect renters and small businesses, who are already struggling to keep up with escalating rents and rising interest rates.

The budget proposal fails to recognize the very real affordability crisis and instead chooses to add to the financial strain of its residents. It is high time for city officials to practice what they preach and address the crisis head-on. A budget that includes no increases in property taxes and utility bills is not just desirable, but necessary to ensure Austin remains a livable city for all.

The city must identify areas to cut excessive spending and maximize tax dollars efficiently. With over $40 million in potential cost savings already identified, it is clear that a more responsible and compassionate budget is well within reach.

It is imperative that the City of Austin demonstrates its commitment to its residents, especially low-income families and those on fixed incomes, by reining in wasteful spending and passing a budget that provides much-needed financial relief.
