Texas Tax-Free Weekend is a Band-Aid Solution for Struggling Families

As another school year looms, Texans are offered a meager tax break on essential school supplies and clothing. This annual "holiday" is a small relief for families struggling with the rising costs of living and a flawed education system.

Before children return to school, the tax holiday offers parents the chance to check off a few items from their back-to-school lists.

When:
Friday, Aug. 9 to midnight Sunday, Aug. 11.

What's Included:

  • Most clothing, shoes, and school supplies under $100.

Texas Comptroller's list of tax-free items: https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-490/school-supplies.php

What's NOT Included:

  • Items over $100
  • Clothing subscription boxes
  • Athletic clothing/footwear
  • Jewelry, handbags, briefcases, etc.
  • Computers, software, textbooks
  • Luggage, athletic bags, purses

Online Shopping:
Qualifying items can be purchased online, and the sale must occur within the designated period.

School Supply Lists:
Find lists at H-E-B via TeacherLists, or check Walmart, Target, Staples, Office Depot, or Walgreens.

Refunds:
If you're charged tax on qualifying items, request a refund from the seller or use Form 00-985 to file with the Texas comptroller's office.

This tax-free weekend is a drop in the bucket for Texas families. It does little to address the systemic issues affecting our education system and the financial strains on households. We need radical change, not temporary relief.
