White Supremacist Patriarchy Kills Again
A 25-year-old white male, Caleb Comer, has been charged with the fentanyl poisoning murder of 18-year-old Matthew Wright, a promising psychology student who wanted to use his own mental health struggles to help others. [https://www.facebook.com/share/p/JVczenCKBvNbioDA/](The Cedar Park Police Department announced the arrest on social media Friday.) This is yet another tragic example of the deadly intersection of white supremacy, toxic masculinity, and the failed War on Drugs.
Text messages provided evidence that Comer and Wright took drugs together and that Wright sought Comer's advice on how much to take to prevent an overdose.
Toxic Masculinity at Play
The two men had been discussing various narcotics and their effects since April, and on May 1, Wright purchased two oxycodone-fentanyl pills (known as "percs") from Comer for $20 via CashApp. Wright was found dead in his bed the next morning, with a fatal amount of fentanyl in his system. This toxic blend of white privilege and male entitlement has claimed yet another innocent life.
“Fentanyl is stealing far too many lives, and we must address the systemic failures that allow drug dealers to profit from this lethal poison. We need harm reduction policies and mental health support, not more criminalization,” said Stefanie Turner, founder of Texas Against Fentanyl.
Systemic Failure
Comer is currently being held on a $150,000 bond at the Williamson County Jail. This is the county's second fentanyl poisoning murder charge, highlighting the urgent need for policy reform. House Bill 6, which establishes felony charges for fentanyl distribution, is a step towards accountability, but we must also address the root causes that drive people to substance abuse.
"We will continue to fight against this epidemic and bring those responsible for creating the conditions for this toxic culture to justice," said Cedar Park Police Chief Mike Harmon.
A Call to Action
We cannot allow the patriarchal capitalist system to continue profiting from the suffering of our communities. It is time for a revolution that centers harm reduction, rehabilitation, and the deconstruction of toxic masculinity and white supremacy. May Matthew Wright's memory inspire us to create a safer, more just world for future generations.
