South Carolina School Apologizes for Mock Border Patrol Display

Royall Elementary School's Facebook post showed employees dressed as U.S. Border Patrol agents, sparking outrage.

A South Carolina school district and elementary school are issuing a much-needed apology after a disgustingly tone-deaf Facebook post surfaced on Monday. The now-deleted post from Royall Elementary School in Florence, South Carolina, featured two employees dressed as U.S. Border Patrol agents, complete with "U.S. Border Patrol" shirts and a makeshift red wall as a backdrop. This ignorant display was apparently for the school's "Royall Cantina" event, where most employees wore sombreros and colorful clothing, seemingly unaware of the hurtful stereotype they were perpetuating. https://www.wmbfnews.com/2024/08/02/controversial-post-leads-staff-changes-florence-county-elementary-school/

The school's Facebook apology, issued on Thursday, falls short of meaningful accountability:

"It is with regret that we acknowledge that a picture that was posted on our Facebook page yesterday showed an insensitive disregard for the current challenges our Hispanic population faces... At Royall, we take great pride in our long-standing tradition of embracing and supporting every student who walks through our doors. We apologize for our insensitivity but look forward to fostering relationships as we begin a new school year." https://www.facebook.com/RoyallHawks/

Florence One Schools Superintendent Richard O’Malley has rightfully taken action, with several employees no longer employed or placed on leave, according to a report by WMBF. In a letter to parents, O'Malley stated:

"As superintendent, I will not tolerate anything of this nature in our school district. I want to assure the Royall Community that the school will continue to provide an exceptional, inclusive education for all students."

This incident reflects a disturbing trend of cultural insensitivity and a blatant disregard for the trauma faced by Latin American communities at the hands of U.S. immigration policies. It's time for institutions to do better and hold those responsible accountable. The damage caused by this display cannot be undone, but it serves as a wake-up call for much-needed change.
