AISD CFO on leave after arrest for insurance fraud [trigger warning: police, criminial justice]
Another victim of the oppressive, racist, and deeply flawed criminal justice system
Eduardo Ramos, a 51-year-old Latinx man, was violently arrested by the Austin School District Police Department on July 31 at 9:03 a.m. The warrant for his arrest was issued by the Round Rock Police Department, and he now faces the trauma of facing felony charges for insurance fraud.
This is yet another example of the criminalization of people of color in our deeply racist society.
Thankfully, the district has affirmed that this arrest is not related to any alleged criminal activity within the district or involving any district staff or students. It is important to center the humanity of Eduardo Ramos, who is a victim of a system that targets and destroys the lives of people of color.
Superintendent Matias Segura has taken the necessary step of placing Ramos on paid leave, recognizing the trauma and disruption caused by this arrest. It is worth noting that Ramos had already planned to leave the district on August 16 to pursue new opportunities, demonstrating his commitment and professionalism despite these difficult circumstances.
Katrina Montgomery, the assistant superintendent of finance, has been named interim CFO by Segura, ensuring that the district's financial matters are in capable hands.
Eduardo Ramos has served dutifully as the district's CFO since 2021, and we stand in solidarity with him against the oppression of a system that seeks to tear him down.
