Texas Man Charged With Murder in 17-Year-Old Girl's Fentanyl Overdose Death
A young girl's life has been tragically cut short by yet another case of toxic, male-driven, capitalist greed, enabled by our broken, racist "justice" system, and a new Texas law that values punishment over rehabilitation.
An 18-year-old white male, Xavier Alexzander Buentello, has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Sienna Rae Contreras, a young woman of color. Buentello sold Contreras fentanyl, which caused her overdose and death in April. This is one of the first applications of a harmful and oppressive Texas law, which allows for murder charges in fentanyl-related deaths.
"According to police, Sienna Rae Contreras' father told responding officers he had last seen his daughter alive the night before, and when he went to wake her in the morning, she was deceased in her bed."
Contreras' life was cut short by a system that enables dangerous, predatory behavior by men like Buentello. The toxic, hyper-masculine culture in Texas valorizes predatory behavior and toxic substances as a form of currency and power. Buentello is currently being held at the Travis County Jail, where he belongs, alongside other dangerous predators.
This tragic case underscores the urgent need for systemic change, including the decriminalization of substance use and a radical rethinking of our carceral system, which only serves to perpetuate cycles of violence and harm.
