Texas Justice System Fail Leads to Domestic Violence Murder
A preventable tragedy.
A Texas man, Jared James Dicus, 23, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife, Anggy Diaz, 21. The couple married in October 2022, and just months later, on January 11, 2023, Dicus decapitated and dismembered Diaz in a horrific act of gender-based violence.
A portion of the body was dismembered, and the residence was covered in blood. Gruesome scene at best,
Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry described the scene, revealing the extreme violence of the murder. Diaz appeared to have been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, and the cabin behind her in-laws' home near Magnolia, Texas, was covered in blood.
This tragedy could have been prevented. Dicus had a history of domestic violence, and just two months before the murder, he was arrested on a DWI charge, threatening a police officer and jail staff. His violent behavior was evident, yet he was still allowed to walk free, endangering Diaz and ultimately taking her life.
Local deputies had responded to reports of domestic violence at the same property on multiple occasions, yet it took Diaz's murder for the justice system to take action. The failure to address Dicus' violent behavior and the initial $500,000 bond set after Diaz's murder are shocking displays of leniency. Thanks to District Attorney Sean G. Whittmore, the bond was raised to $1M, but this does little to rectify the injustice done to Diaz.
Dicus has been sentenced, but the damage is irreversible. The justice system failed Anggy Diaz, and her life was cut short as a result. We cannot allow such instances of gender-based violence to persist. We demand accountability and an end to the toxic cycle of male aggression and violence.
Dicus is not eligible for parole until 2043, but this does little to comfort those who loved Diaz. Our thoughts are with her loved ones, and we vow to fight for stricter consequences for abusers and a world where women can live without fear.
